Invisalign® clear aligners are a safe, painless, and discrete way to straighten your smile. Like all oral health devices, it’s important to keep them clean if you want to reap the full benefits of the device.
Improperly maintained aligners can harbor bacteria. These bacteria can cause damage to your teeth and potentially introduce new health problems if left unchecked. Read our quick tips to make sure you’re getting the most out of your clear aligners.
Be Thorough, But Not Rough When You Clean Them
When you remove your aligners, be sure to rinse them off. The aligners could easily become a breeding ground for bacteria if unrinsed. Brushing them lightly with only a soft toothbrush can help remove bacteria.
For more thorough cleaning, soak them in warm (not hot) water with Invisalign® cleaning crystals. Avoid brushing them with toothpaste or soaking them in mouthwash and denture cleaners. Some of these can make the aligners appear more conspicuous.
You can also use warm water and baking soda or a clear, unscented soap and warm water to clean your aligners safely. These methods reduce the chance of damage and staining to your aligners while keeping them clean and free of bacteria.
Always Remove Them Before Eating & Drinking
It’s important to remove your aligners before eating or drinking to keep away bacteria and stains. Always brush and floss your teeth thoroughly before putting your aligners back in. When you’re not wearing your aligners, be sure to store them in their case.
