What Do You Need to Know About Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns sound like something to do with royalty. But you don’t have to be a king or queen to benefit from a dental crown. This is a versatile dental treatment that can be used to improve many oral health situations.

What Dental Crowns Can Fix

Fillings are used to treat dental cavities. Root canal therapy is used to treat a severely infected tooth. Dental crowns, on the other hand, have many different uses. They can strengthen a tooth that’s been damaged due to decay or another kind of damage. They can add support to a tooth that’s weakened by a large filling. They’re even used to improve the appearance of worn-down, misshapen, or discolored teeth!

How Getting a Dental Crown Works

Getting a dental crown requires a couple of steps. First, we use an intraoral camera to take an impression of your tooth so that your custom crown will fit perfectly. During this initial appointment, we’ll also prep your tooth so that the crown can be properly placed. Next, a specialized lab will fabricate the crown. While waiting for the dental lab to do its thing, we’ll fit you with a temporary crown so that your prepared tooth isn’t exposed. Once we have the newly made crown at our office, we’ll call you back so the crown can be placed. We’ll do any fit adjustments necessary to ensure it feels and functions well.
